What is SERM and how it differs from SEO

July 2, 2026 · 6 min read

SERM (Search Engine Reputation Management) is managing reputation in search results. Simply put, it is work on what people see when they search your company name on Google. If page one has trustworthy reviews, articles and profiles, the customer continues. If it has complaints and scandalous posts, they go to a competitor.

How SERM differs from SEO

SEO answers “how do we rank for target queries” like “buy a sofa” or “CRM for business”. SERM answers another question: “what does someone see who already knows your brand and searches it by name”. The metrics differ. SEO cares about positions and site traffic; SERM cares about the share of positive and neutral results on page one for brand queries.

Classic SEO does not fix negativity. You cannot outrank a bad review page just by optimizing your own site — you need other authoritative brand materials to push it down.

When a business needs SERM

Teams usually come to SERM after a bad event: a negative article, a former employee review on Glassdoor, a wave of bad reviews from competitors, or complaints surfacing for the brand name. Better to start earlier: building a positive backdrop is cheaper than repairing a damaged SERP.

What the work includes

Suppression. We publish authoritative, useful brand materials on platforms Google trusts. Over time they rise above negativity and push it off page one.

Neutralization. Defamation and rule-breaking content is removed lawfully through platform moderation. Real negativity is not deleted — we reply and solve the customer’s problem.

Positive backdrop. We help get more reviews from happy customers, fill company profiles and grow brand mentions on niche platforms.

Which platforms matter most

The set depends on the industry, but the core is almost always the same: Google and the company profile there, Trustpilot and similar review sites, niche platforms (G2 and Capterra for SaaS, specialist resources for iGaming and fintech, app stores for mobile products) and communities like Reddit and Quora. AI search cites the latter more often, so their weight is growing.

Where to start

Start with an audit: search the brand name on Google and count how many page-one results work for you, against you, or are neutral. We do that audit for free and immediately propose a plan to change the SERP.
